Wrapping a door for Christmas is easier to do than you think! Greet your visitors with this simple-to-make Christmas Door Decor! Wrapped in seasonal wrapping paper, your entryway will greet your friends and family with “Joy” all holiday season. This easy tutorial is made from gift-wrapping materials you already have in your home!
Wrapping A Door For Christmas Tutorial
I love Christmas decor and crafts that you can easily adapt to your own style. Originally, this post was created as a part of my Christmas Home Tour. I would love for you to take a moment and see how I decorated the interior of my home for Christmas, too.
For this outdoor Christmas decor idea, I decided against using a wreath and decorated the entire door! The door is wrapped with wrapping paper I got on clearance a few years back. You can use any wrapping paper you have on hand. Just make sure you have enough for the entire door!
The word “Joy” is spelled using tinsel and wire coat hangers. You can also choose another word for the door. Remember, you want people to be able to see your handiwork as they drive by, so I recommend keeping it simple.
I also turned my front door into a snowman one year. You can also do a similar front door decoration for Halloween. This is a unique way to welcome visitors throughout every season. Couple this craft with other front porch Christmas decorations, and you are good to go!
Supplies Needed For Wrapping A Door For Christmas
- Painter’s tape
- Wrapping paper
- Wire coat hangers
- Tinsel
- Plain greenery wreath
- Scissors
- Fishing line
- Pliers (optional)
Step 1: Wrap Wire Hanger In Red Tinsel
To get started, form the wire coat hangers into a “J” and “Y” shape (you may want to use a pair of pliers to do this). Next, wrap the hangers with the red tinsel, and secure with hot glue. If you choose another color for the tinsel, make sure it pops against the wrapping paper!
Step 2: Wrap Door With Wrapping Paper
Now, you are ready to wrap your door. Start at the top of the door and secure with painter’s tape. You will need to cut around the door knob and hardware with scissors. As you wrap your door, secure it as necessary with painter’s tape.
Step 3: Add Wreath
The wreath will serve as the “O”. Feel free to decorate the wreath if you choose. I took a plain greenery wreath and wrapped it with some more red tinsel.
Step 4: Tie Letters With Fishing Line
Next, tie each letter together with fishing line. Make sure they are equally spaced.
Step 5: Hang Joy Sign
Now, hang “JOY” on the door over the wrapping paper to greet your guests!
While I was on the front porch, I added a few more Christmas touches!
A few red balls added to my bird cage will also help to welcome any Christmas visitors!
A very welcoming addition to my front door, indeed. I love how this easy Christmas door decor came to life! I can’t wait to see what you will create!
FAQs About Wrapping A Door For Christmas
Here are a couple of questions that I see readers ask about wrapping a door for Christmas. If you have a question, please check to see if I’ve already answered it below. Don’t see your question? Leave it for me in the comments!
Where Did You Get Your Wrapping Paper?
I bought my wrapping paper from Hobby Lobby, but you can use any type of wrapping paper that you have for this project!
How Many Hangers Did You Use To Shape The Letters?
I used one hanger for the ”J” and one hanger for the ”Y”. For the ”Y”, I cut the hanger so I would have two pieces to twist together.
How Did You Bend The Coat Hangers (Without Getting It All Squiggled Up)?
I used a pair of pliers. The beauty of this project is that most of the imperfections are covered up by that red tinsel!
Should I Shop For My Wreath Before I Make My Letters?
That is up to you! However, in my opinion, I do think shopping for a wreath before you make your letters is best. This is because the size wreath you buy can give you an idea of how big your letters should be for your door.

Your front door is adorable! Very neat idea using the hangers as letters. I have been decorating for the past week and a half and am still not done! I am hoping to do a tour of my home next week as well.
