Personalized ornaments are super popular and make great DIY gift ideas. Here’s a new personalized Christmas ornament for you. Learn how to make state ornaments for your tree this year!
I love making Christmas ornaments. The creative possibilities are nearly endless, and there’s just something wonderful about holiday crafting.
Every year I make a few more ornaments, so by now, our tree is a fun walk down memory lane! We love pulling out the ornaments together and going through them as we hang them up. We have a great mix of family memories and crafting successes on our tree.
Not too long ago, I saw personalized state art for sale, and it inspired me to make personalized Christmas state ornaments! In fact, I was so inspired that I made them almost right away.
These state Christmas ornaments are perfect for your tree! They have been very popular on the site, and I have made a ton of them for gifts. They are one of my favorite ornaments too.
Note: If you want to add more homemade Christmas ornaments to your collection, these Paper Christmas Ornaments, Rustic Angel Ornaments with Burlap, and Plaid Christmas Ornaments are all excellent choices!

Supplies Needed
Here’s what you’ll need for this craft. I’ve even included a few handy links to help you find some items faster and more easily.
- United States wood cutout (this one on Etsy is similar to mine, and it’s really affordable)
- Industrial hole punch or drill
- White craft paint
- Grey craft paint
- Red craft paint (or paint pen)
- Pen
- Paintbrushes
- Printed map of the United States (in the same size as your cutout)
- Ribbon
- Scissors
Ornament Instructions
Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process of making your own personalized state ornament!
Step 1
You will need to add a hole to the wood piece for hanging. You can use an industrial hole punch, drill, or even just a sharp screwdriver.
Step 2
Paint with as many coats of white as it takes. Be sure to allow it to dry completely in between coats.
Step 3
Print out a map of the US (with the state outlines) that is about the same size as your wood piece.
Step 4
Lay the paper on top of your wood and trace around the shape of the state with a ballpoint pen. The pen will make a slight indention in the wood, so you know where to paint to make your custom state ornaments.
Step 5
Then you just fill the indention with your gray paint. Use any gray craft paint you have on hand. Paint a small heart in the approximate location of the city.
Step 6
Add a ribbon to hang your ornament up, and you are done. These are easy and oh-so personal! A great addition to any Christmas tree.
You have to love a personalized ornament that only takes minutes to make! These state Christmas ornaments will look great all over your tree this holiday season.

FAQs
Here are a couple of questions that I see readers ask about making custom state ornaments. If you have a question, please check to see if I’ve already answered it below. Don’t see your question? Leave it for me in the comments!
How do you get the state to look so precise?
I used a paintbrush and red craft paint to free-hand my state. However, if you don’t feel confident enough in your free-hand painting, a fine-line paint pen might be a better option. You can find them in nearly any color, and they’re a great alternative!
What are other ways to personalize these state Christmas ornaments?
I opted to go with a simple, rustic look. However, if you want to add a little more pizazz, you could play around with colors (or offer color choices to your clients). You could also add a state motto or a nickname. For example, for Tennesee, I would add “The Volunteer State.”
Let your imagination guide you to greatness on this!
