As a crafter, you need a way to organize your plentiful supplies. I discovered a great hack for making a DIY paintbrush organizer that’s gorgeous, functional, and affordable! Follow this tutorial to make a unique paintbrush organizer of your own.

How To Make A Paintbrush Organizer
If you’re a crafter, you probably know the frustration of not having a good way to organize your crafting supplies to find what you want when you need it (without searching multiple places).
Recently, I realized just how unorganized my supplies have been. So, lately, I’ve been on a craft supply organizing kick! I’ve put my creativity to work and have come up with some great craft supply organization ideas that hardly cost a thing.
I’m excited to show off my paintbrush organizer! I found something amazing at the thrift store months ago, but the inspiration on what to do with it didn’t hit me until recently. Believe it or not, a letter or desk organizer makes a great place to put your paintbrushes.
So, let’s make a paintbrush organizer!
Supplies Needed To Make Paintbrush Organizer
- Letter organizer
- Americana gloss enamel paint
- Paintbrush
NOTE: I found this letter organizer at the thrift store for only $2. It has amazing detail, so I had to grab it! I know it looks like wood, but it is actually plastic. Maybe you could call it faux wood? Also, I gave up on the two-tone idea after this picture was taken but did not go back and take another. I ended up only using the Primary Yellow.
Step 1: Paint The Organizer
To achieve this bright look, I literally just painted many, many coats with my Gloss Enamel and a brush.
The faux wood was so dark that it took a few coats to get it covered. You can still see those gorgeous details, but I think they look so much better – almost playful – in bright, glossy yellow.
Step 2: Fill Your Organizer With Supplies
Add your paintbrushes to the compartments! I organized mine by the type of brush (ex: foam vs. standard), but you can organize yours any way that makes sense to you (type, size, etc.).
When I began my organization journey, I started with organizing buttons in mason jars, and now I am organizing paintbrushes in a letter organizer! Both of these crafts have gotten my creative juices flowing, and now I’m on the hunt for even more unique organizers for my craft space! – I think another trip to the thrift store is in my future!
This is just one of several hacks I’ve used recently, and it’s made a huge difference for me! If you want even more tips and tricks for your space, check out my craft room organization ideas!
FAQs About Paint Brush Organizer
Here are a few common questions that I often see readers asking about making this paintbrush organizer. If you have a question, please check if I’ve already addressed it below. If you don’t see your question listed, please leave it in the comments!
Do I Need To Use A Letter Organizer For This Project?
No, you can use any thrifted item that has compartments for organizing!
Do I Need To Prime The Organizer Before Painting It?
No, you don’t need to. That said, if your organizer has a large stain or is a very dark color, priming it first could be an option so that you don’t need to paint as many coats as mine required.
What Kind Of Paint Is Best To Use For This Craft?
I wanted that shiny look, so I used the Gloss Enamel. However, you can use any crafting paint you want if you prefer a different look!

What a good idea! Very chic, too! I may have to look for something similar at the thrift store to make a nice holder for my pens and paintbrushes!
