You know I love a quick and easy craft project. Today I’m going to teach you how to cut stiff felt with a Cricut machine to make an Frozen movie crown.
If you’ve never cut felt with your Cricut before you’re going to love how well it works.
Because stiff felt is cut with the fine point blade you can cut it with any Cricut machine. This includes the Joy machine lineup, Explore Air, Maker, and the Cricut Venture.
Supplies Needed
Let’s look at the supplies we’re going to use to make this felt Elsa crown.
- Stiff Felt
- Cricut Machine
- Fabric Paint
- Elastic
- Fabric Glue or Sewing Machine
- Heat and Bond (optional)
- Hot glue (optional)
- Frozen Crown SVG file (You can get this file by clicking here!)
Instructions to make a Frozen movie Crown
Step 1 – Upload SVG files
To begin we need to upload the file into Design Space. Download the file from the link to your computer and then upload it into Cricut Design Space.
Need help uploading files into Design Space? Check out this video for step by step instructions.
Step 2 – Add file to canvas
Once you have the file uploaded into Cricut Design Space, add your Frozen movie crown design to the canvas. From here, ensure the design is sized as you want it and then click Make It.
Step 3 – Cut out with your Cricut machine
Next, we need to choose our material setting. For this project you want to use a stiff felt so the crown stands up. Stiff felt can be cut on any Cricut machine using the Fine Point blade.
If you’re using a Cricut Maker, I suggest using the Rotary Blade, as it works best with most fabrics. You may need to adjust your material setting for the Rotary Blade to be an option.
Never cut felt with your Cricut before? Make sure you do a test cut first to check that you’re getting a clean cut.
If you’re planning to paint the felt you can cut all the pieces out of one felt piece. If you’re using specific felt colors cut the jewels and crown pieces separately.
Note: Choosing your felt
If you can’t find stiff felt in the color you need you have two options:
- Choose a different color and then use a fabric paint to paint it the color you want.
- Use a fabric bonder like heat n bond and add that to a softer felt in the color you want.
If you choose option 2 make sure you add the stiffener only to the back of the crown piece.
Step 4 – Paint felt (if necessary)
If your felt is not the color you want your final crown to be use a fabric paint and paint it the right color. Make sure you protect your surface because paint will likely bleed through the fabric.
If you’re painting your felt pieces make sure you paint the jewel components a coordinating color like I did. Since these are jewel pieces using a fun sparkle paint is a great way to make the jewels pop.
Step 5 – Assemble your Frozen movie crown
Now that we have all of our pieces prepped use a fabric adhesive or hot glue to adhere the jewel pieces to the crown base.
Use the photo below as an example for how the pieces should be laid out.
Once the adhesive is dry it’s time to add the elastic. Use a measurement for the person who will be wearing the grown as a guide and cut the elastic to length. Use a fabric glue or sewing machine to secure the elastic to the ends of the crown.
If you’re using a fabric glue make sure you give it plenty of time to dry before use so it doesn’t pull away from the felt.
Step 6 – Enjoy your crown
Now you have a Frozen movie crown that is perfect for dress up play, Halloween, or any day of the week!
These crowns are easy to make and would be perfect gifts or party favors. If your little one loves Frozen as much as the rest of us they’re going to love their new crown.
I hope I’ve answered any questions you have about cutting stiff felt with a Cricut machine. If you have any other questions leave them in the comments and I’ll answer those for you.
I love this! Simple costume pieces are the best!
This is great! I’ve pinned this to two boards. Stopping by from the hop (I’m number 14). 🙂
I have a question. On the Elsa crown is that the actual size to be cut out. I am doing this for a 5 year old. Thank you.
I believe so. You may cut it from paper first and try it on to make sure it will fit.
