Supplies Needed To Make Ghost Solar Lights
Unfortunately, some of the paints used in this tutorial are no longer available. I linked to alternative paint options in the supply list below.
- Pint mason jars (ones with at least one smooth side are best)
- Solar lights with a stake
- White glass stain
- Alternative Option: Deco Art Glass Paint, White
- 3D Gloss Enamels in black
- Alternative Option: Gallery Glass, Black Stained Glass
- Hammer
- Small pointed screwdriver
- Paintbrush
- Rubbing alcohol
Step 1: Modify Jar Lid
First, modify the jar lid to accept your solar light. Trace around your solar light base, and then use a hammer with a pointed screwdriver to go around that line. I usually go around both sides until the middle just falls out.
CAUTION: The edges will be VERY sharp!
Step 2: Paint Mason Jar
Next, we need to paint the pint jar. Clean the surface well with rubbing alcohol and allow it to dry before painting. Use a paintbrush to apply a coating of white glass stain to the entire jar. Allow it to sit upside down so the excess will run off the bottom. Once the excess has run down, move it to a clean piece of paper or cardboard. Allow it to dry completely before continuing.
Step 3: Add Ghost Face
Lay the jar DOWN FLAT and add the ghost eyes and nose with the black 3D writer. The paint ran too much when I sat the jar up, as shown in the image below. Allow to dry completely. Bake your jar according to the package directions on the paint you used. This will ensure your paint is permanent and will not wash off in the rain.
Step 4: Assemble Jar
Assemble the jar onto the solar light and put it outside. These DIY ghost solar lights will light up the night of Halloween!
This fun project is perfect for outdoor Halloween decorating! I love a simple project that looks great! Y’all, be sure to make some of these ghost solar lights for your home this Fall.
FAQs About Ghost Solar Lights
If you have questions about making these ghost solar lights, I have answers! If you don’t see your question answered below, please leave it in the comments.
How Do You Get The Original Labels Off Your Jars?
Good question! If you are using jars from your kitchen (like pickle jars, jam jars, etc.) there are several ways to remove the original label.
For my jars, I let them soak in warm, soapy water, then used a scraper to remove the label. This worked for me, but if you are dealing with a stubborn label, below are a few more things you can do.
- Pour hot water into the jar, let it sit, and it will loosen up the label on the outside.
- Create a mixture of dish soap and vinegar.
- Apply heat to the label using a hair dryer.
How Do You Get Sticky Residue Off Your Jars?
I used Goo Gone, soap, and water to remove any sticky residue from the jars. However, if you don’t like the smell of Goo Gone or need other options, below are a few ideas.
- Adhesive Removers (like 3M Adhesive Remover, Un-Du, etc.)
- White Vinegar
- Nail Polish Remover
Can You Adjust The Size Of These Ghost Solar Lights?
Yes, you can. However, if you decide to use smaller or bigger mason jars, you will need to find the appropriate size solar light to match them.
Where Can You Get Solar Lights?
Solar lights can be found at various places, such as Amazon, Walmart, and even the Dollar Store! I found mine at Dollar General.
