How to Make a Leprechaun Mason Jar Craft
If you can’t find the green jars I am using, you can always paint your mason jar green instead.
Supplies needed:
- Green Mason Jar (pint size)
- Green Felt Sheet
- Orange Felt Sheet
- Tan Felt Sheet
- Black Satin Ribbon
- Glitter Shamrock Stickers
- Large Googly Eyes
- Orange Button
- Scissors
- Hot Glue and Glue Gun
Step 1: Cut Felt
Start by making your leprechaun face. Cut the beard from orange felt. Just make sure it is long enough to go almost to the bottom of your mason jar. Otherwise, just freehand the shape. Use hot glue to secure it as well as the eyes and button nose to a piece of tan felt.
NOTE: I am using scissors to cut my felt by hand but you can also cut felt with a Cricut machine to make this project a bit easier.
Step 2: Glue Felt to Jar
Trim the excess tan felt and glue the entire thing to the front of the green mason jar as shown below.
Step 3: Make Felt Hat
Now it is time to make the hat! Cut a 2 inch strip of felt from one end of the sheet. Trace the outside of your mason jar lid onto the felt and cut one circle. A third ring needs to be cut where the inner circle is the same size as the mason jar lid and the outer circle is about 3/4 to 1 inch larger in diameter. See the three pieces below.
Again, these can be cut with a Cricut machine instead of by hand!
Hot glue the pieces together as shown below to resemble a hat.
Hot glue the mason jar lid inside as shown and the black ribbon around as a hat band.
Add one of the shamrock stickers to the side of the hat. You can use additional hot glue to hold this into place as the sticker may not work well on felt.
Step 4: Finish Mason Jar Leprechaun
Put the lid on your mason jar and you have a completed mason jar leprechaun for Saint Patrick’s Day. Add in some gold chocolates for a fun gift.
Tips for Letting the Kids Help
The kids will love helping with this craft idea. Here are a few tips to make this leprechaun craft more kids friendly:
- Let them create their own face and hat. It does not have to be perfect! Turn them loose with the scissors and a template you have drawn.
- You can either assist with the hot glue or use a kids glue. The dry time will just be much longer if you choose to use kids glue.
- Add additional shamrock stickers around the jar. Kids love stickers and letting them add extras will just add to the fun!
- Let them fill the jars with candies to gift to neighbors and friends. They will love giving something they helped to make!
However you decide to make it, be sure to add this mason jar leprechaun to your must make list this year!
So, will you be adding this leprechaun craft to your must make list this Saint Patrick’s Day. It is a cute addition to your decorations or use them to give as gifts. Either way, have fun making this cute mason jar craft idea!
