You can make a bug jar that glows in the dark in just minutes. This quick and easy craft idea is perfect for those summer nights and catching lightning bugs. It is mason jar week around here and I am joining with some of my friends to bring you summer jar ideas all week. This is such a cute idea for the little ones! Catching lightning bugs is a favorite passtime, so I created this easy jar so you can admire the bugs, then set them free. What a great way to entertain the kids while the adults hang out in the backyard.
This quick DIY is perfect for kids to make with adult supervision. Let them place the glow in the dark stars wherever they choose. Don’t forget to check out my other bug-themed crafts, too.
How to Make a Bug Jar
Supplies needed to make a bug jar:
Some links below may be affiliate links which means that you do not pay anymore.
- Pint-sized mason jar (I like this version that does not have embossing on the sides)
- Silhouette glow in the dark sticker paper
- Star punch
Start by punching the stars from the paper. You will have to press firmly as the paper is thick but this standard punch worked fine as you can see. Then just peel the backing from your stars and add them to your jar. Be sure the surface of your jar is clean before adding any stickers.
Continue to add the stars randomly around the jar until the entire bug jar has glow-in-the-dark stars on it. Then add some ventilation holes in your lid for the bugs. I used a nail and hammer to add these to the top of my jar.
You are now ready to hand this bug jar over to a little one in your life and let them go capture some memories.
When it gets dark you will see the stars start to glow. That makes this bug jar even more fun! A starry jar for a starry night!
Catching bugs around the farm has never been so much fun!
