How To Make DIY Chalkboard Kitchen Canisters
Making cute farmhouse decor has never been easier! Spray paint your own set of canisters with chalkboard paint and use them as storage in any room of your house. Perfect to store small items like kitchen spices, office supplies, or even pet treats!
So let’s get started!
Supplies Needed
Here’s what you’ll need to gather:
- Canister tins (any size and type you like)
- Metal primer
- Chalkboard paint
- Masking tape
- Plastic wrap
DIY Kitchen Canisters Instructions
Follow these step-by-step instructions on how to make a handmade farmhouse canister set.
Step 1: Clean and Prep the Canister
First, make sure your canisters are washed and cleaned. You can do this by using a damp cloth to wipe off any dust and dirt.
Once they’re clean, let them dry for a few minutes, and then tape off the area that you will be painting (top part).
I put some masking tape around the tip-top of my tins and used plastic wrap to keep the paint out of the inside. I would think that if you paint all the way to the top the lid would scratch off the paint.
But if y’all are feeling courageous — go for it!
Step 2: Apply Primer
Next, apply your metal primer. Be sure to spray paint with metal primer before the topcoat because primer helps the paint to stick well.
Then, let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes before you move on to the next step.
Step 3: Paint Your Chalkboard Canisters
Now it’s time to get your chalkboard paint ready! Fun fact: You can buy chalkboard paint or try making your own. For today’s project, I will be showing you how to paint these canisters with spray paint.
Shake the paint can and then use a smooth, even stroke to apply the paint. You’ll want to do multiple thin layers — not one thick layer. This will help make sure that the finish is nice and even.
Let each coat dry for about 15 minutes before applying another one. When the paint is dry, you can carefully remove the masking tape and plastic wrap.
Voilà! Your handmade DIY kitchen canisters are all ready to use and enjoy!
You can fill them up with your favorite spices or use them to store any small items in your kitchen or even other rooms of your house.
FAQs
If you have questions about making these canisters set, I have answers for you! Please leave your question for me in the comments if you don’t see it already answered below.
Can I use regular paint to make my own chalkboard canisters?
Yes, you can definitely use regular paint! However, keep in mind that it might not have the same matte finish as the spray paint. You could also try making your own chalkboard paint using plaster of Paris and paint.
Can I use any type of canister tins?
Yes, you can use any type of canister tins you like. They don’t even have to be vintage! Just make sure they are clean and dry before you start painting.
