Cinnamon applesauce ornaments are the perfect activity to make with kids over the holiday season. We have made these several times around here and loved them! They also hold up really well and add an amazing aroma to your Christmas tree. So, if you have an afternoon with the kids between now and Christmas, be sure to whip up a batch of cinnamon ornaments!
How To Make Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
These cinnamon applesauce ornaments are so simple to make and can be customized in a variety of ways! For today’s project, I chose to make my ornaments in a ”traditional style”. However, you can use unique cookie cutters and ribbons to make your own custom ornaments that are perfect for your Christmas tree!
Ingredients For Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
- ¾ cup applesauce
- 1 ¼ cup ground cinnamon
- Waxed paper
- Cookie cutters
- Straw or bamboo skewer
- Ribbon for hanging
Step 1: Preheat Oven
Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: Combine Applesauce & Cinnamon
In a bowl, mix together applesauce and cinnamon to form a clay-like dough.
Step 3: Cut Out Ornament Shapes
Roll out dough between sheets of waxed paper to about ½ inch thick. Cut using cookie cutters. Using a straw or bamboo skewer, create a hole for hanging the ornament.
Step 4: Bake Ornaments
Transfer ornaments to a baking sheet. Bake for 2 ½ hours. Remove from oven and place ornaments in a cooling rack.
Step 5: Let Ornament Cool
Allow ornaments to dry on the cooling rack for 24 to 48 hours, turning occasionally.
Step 6: Add Ribbon
Add a ribbon to ornaments for hanging or to attach to packages.
These are so easy to make and one recipe for these cinnamon applesauce ornaments will make a bunch. You can make these in any shape that you like. You can even add designs to your ornaments with tools before baking.
These also make a great holiday tradition. Get the kids together and make a batch of these every year. Your home will smell amazing and they will love adding their own personal ornaments to the tree year after year.
You can also keep these and use them year after year. The ornaments hold up great and even hold some of their fragrance. Although, the aroma will fade over the years!
Tips and Tricks for Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
Now that you’ve seen these fun cinnamon applesauce ornaments, are you ready to make your own? Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure your project goes as smoothly as possible!
- Make This Project Budget Friendly – These cinnamon applesauce ornaments do not have to cost a fortune to make! Instead, go to your local Dollar Tree and buy all your items to make these ornaments a budget-friendly craft!
- You Don’t Want Sticky Dough – When making the dough for these ornaments, it should be firm and not sticky. If you find that your dough is too sticky you can add in more cinnamon.
- Skip The Wax Paper – If you only have enough wax paper to line your baking sheet that’s ok! Instead of rolling your dough between the wax paper, sprinkle some cinnamon onto your work surface and rolling pin (like you would flour for cookie dough) before you start rolling out your dough. This will help your dough not stick to your work surface and it will roll out more easily.
- Get Creative With Your Ornaments – These ornaments look great on their own, but you can dress them up a bit to make them more decorative! For example, once the ornaments are fully baked, you can outline them with white puff paint to make them look more like cookies!
