I just had to try my hand at flower pot people. I have seen a few different versions of this project but came up with my own clay pot lady after a few tries at some combinations of terra cotta pots. And do you know what? I love how she turned out! You will love just how easy it is to make clay pot people so keep reading for more information.
This is a part of Craft Lightning where we are creating 15-minute crafts (excluding dry time) with clay pots all week this week. You can see all of the clay pot ideas here!
Flower Pot People
The hardest part is finding the right combination of clay pots to fit together to make your person. After you have your pots, the actual project is super quick and easy to make.
Supplies needed to make terracotta pot people:
- Clay pots (The combination I used is represented in the image below. I would recommend dry-fitting your pots in the store until you come up with something that will work.)
- Patio Paint in red, black, white, aqua, and yellow (this is the perfect paint for terra cotta!)
- Paintbrushes
- Glue (use a glue good for outdoor use) (I used DAP Rapid Fuse)
How to make your own clay pot people:
You can watch the entire process in the story below by clicking on the image or you can keep scrolling for step by step instructions.
Start by painting your terra cotta pots. The bottom pot should have “feet” like the image below. Note that the pots will take about two coats of paint for full coverage. Apply one coat, allow to dry completely, then add a second coat.
The face pot should look something like the below. I just free handed all of the painting on this piece.
The sleeve pieces should be painted aqua with yellow trim (or other colors of your choice). The main body piece should be in these same colors but add a collar and three buttons down the front. When it comes time to glue your pieces together, make sure all of your paint is completely dry. Then glue the head, body, and legs together. Also glue the “hand” pieces into the arms during this stage. Let those dry completely.
Once both of those are dry, you can begin to glue the arms to the body. You will need a few items to help support your arm and hold it in place while drying. Glue one arm, allow to dry, then glue the second arm. The hardest part of this project is allowing your pieces to dry! Patience is really the name of the game.
Once both arms have cured, you can add a plant in the head and this one is ready for your porch or patio.
I love this combination of clay pots and how it looks like a woman or girl wearing a dress. So cute and oh so easy! Want a different look? Try this technique for making people from pots as well!
