What Is A Cootie Catcher?
A cootie catcher (also called a fortune teller), is where a piece of paper is folded in such a way that can be moved back and forth while counting out a number or spelling out a word. It’s great fun for kids, and they come up with all sorts of funny “fortunes” for their friends.
I remember when these were popular as my daughter was in grade school. Back then, the girls folded up paper to create their own make-believe version of the future…like, they would be a famous movie star, marry Josh Hartnett, and live in a mansion. You know, silly daydreams!

How To Make Halloween Cootie Catcher
Once you have your cootie catcher printable, folding it is very easy! Below are my instructions, and written instructions are listed at the bottom of the printable. However, if you have trouble, check out my video below from my Valentine Cootie Catcher. In the video, I show you how to fold the Valentine Cootie Catcher, but the method is the same for this Halloween Cootie Catcher.
Step 1: Print Cootie Catcher
Print and cut around the outside of the cootie catcher.
Step 2: Fold Cootie Catcher
Fold in half and in half again.
Step 3: Fold Each Corner Towards The Middle
Open out, turn over so the top is blank, and fold each corner into the middle.
Step 4: Repeat On Opposite Side
Turn over and repeat.
Step 5: Turn Over Cootie Catcher To See Words
Turn over so you can see the words (trick, treat, eek, or boo).
Step 6: Bend Cootie Catcher
Slide your thumb and your finger behind 2 of the words (trick, treat, eek, or boo) and press together so they bend round and touch.
Step 7: Repeat Bend On The Opposite Side
Turn over and repeat with the thumb and finger of the other hand for the other two words (trick, treat, eek, or boo).
Step 8: Check Cootie Catcher
All the words (trick, treat, eek, or boo) should now be at the front with centers touching and you are ready to use your cootie catcher!
How To Use The Halloween Cootie Catcher
For this version of the cootie catcher, the kids pick a word (trick, treat, eek, or boo) and move it back and forth while spelling the word. Then, pick a number and go back and forth again, but this time while counting. Pick another number and lift the flap to read what is inside. Then, you have some Halloween fun right in the comfort of your own home!
Will you be telling ghost stories? Collecting treats? Walking like a zombie? Or any of the other great fortunes that this Halloween fortune teller provides? Print your own free printable Halloween cootie catcher and let the fun begin.
So, grab your free printable above, and be sure to print enough for all of the kids! These are also great for parties, so if you are hosting this year, be sure to print a bunch of them so everyone can go home with one!
