How To Paint Glass Vases
My daughter is currently obsessed with flowers. She wants vases everywhere in her room filled to the brim with all of her favorite flowers!
Realistically, though, flower vases can get quite expensive, and sometimes they can look so plain and boring. So I decided to go on a quick trip to my local Dollar Store to see if I could pick up a few vases that I could spray paint myself.
I found a few vases, and today I’m sharing my step-by-step guide on how to paint glass vases! The process is actually easier to do than you might think, and the results are amazing. Additionally, my step-by-step guide is not just for glass vases, but also for bottles, jars, mason jars, or any other glass containers you may have around your home.

Supplies Needed For Painting Glass Vases
- Glass vase (any shape you want)
- Acrylic spray paint (your choice of color)
- Rubbing alcohol
- Plastic bag
- Paper/Cardboard (to protect your workspace- optional)
Step 1: Gather Supplies
First, gather your supplies. I used one of those green glass vases. You know the ones you have in your kitchen cabinets that you never use. Or, the ones you can pick up at Goodwill for 50 cents? Yep, those!
Step 2: Clean Glass Vase
Before painting the glass vase, ensure it is clean by thoroughly wiping it with rubbing alcohol and allowing it to dry completely for optimal paint adhesion.
Step 3: Place Plastic Bag Inside Glass Vase
Next, stuff your vase with a plastic bag to mask the inside of the vase and prevent the paint from seeping down into it.
Step 4: Spray Paint Vase
Now, it’s time to start painting!
After choosing your color, hold the can of spray paint about 12 inches away from the vase and spray in a circular motion.
PRO TIP: Apply even coats and avoid painting over the same spot more than once.
Step 5: Allow Vase To Dry & Fill With Flowers
Once the vase is fully painted, allow it to dry for several hours. Then, it’s ready to be filled with flowers!
I added my daughter’s favorite- sunflowers! Pretty in blue!
She added it to this little shelf in her room!

FAQs About Painting Glass Vases
Here are a few common questions that I often see readers asking about painting glass vases. If you have a question, please check if I’ve already addressed it below. If you don’t see your question listed, please leave it in the comments.
Can I Use Any Color Of Spray Paint?
Yes! You can use any color that you like.
What Type Of Spray Paint Should I Use?
Acrylic spray paint is the best type to use for painting glass vases. It’s durable and will last a long time.
How Long Will The Paint Last?
The paint should last for several years. However, it may start to fade over time if it’s exposed to direct sunlight.
Can I Seal The Spray Paint?
Yes, you can. I chose not to use a sealer, but you can add one to the top once your spray paint has completely dried. If you do this, make sure to leave your plastic bag inside the vase while adding the sealer. This is because you still want to protect the inside of your vase while applying the sealer.
Can I Use This Method To Paint Other Types Of Glass Objects?
Yes! You can use this method to paint any type of glass object. Just be sure to follow the same painting instructions shown above.

I’ve done so many of these vases. It’s amazing how a little paint can change them up! I did a whole bunch of white ones last year to stage my red bookshelf (repurposed door). Amazing. When you get tired of it, just poof! change it again! hahaha
love your blue vase!
