Is your spice drawer a mess? Do you spend precious time searching for that one spice you need for dinner? I have been there and wasting time searching for spices is the pits! That’s when I began searching for how to organize spices once and for all!
This spice drawer organization idea is super simple and I love organizing spices in mason jars. However, my version has a unique twist that takes an already great idea and makes it even better. I have been living with this mason jar spice organizer for several years now, and it really works for us.
I hope you love it as much as we do!
How To Make Mason Jar Spice Jars
I don’t know about you, but I always enjoy seeing ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos for projects like this. It helps me to really see the difference and visualize how the project would look in my own life. This project on how to organize spices is the perfect example.
So, would you like to see the state of my spice drawer before its transformation? Yep, here it is in the messy, cluttered, disorganized state.
Now here’s what I did to turn this messy, disorganized drawer into a clutter-free, always-find-what-you-need spice drawer!
Supplies Needed To Make Mason Jar Spice Jars
- Ball Quilted Jelly Canning Jar 4 Oz
- Chalkboard Paper
- Sizzix or something to cut circles
- Sizzix Framelits Die Set Circles
- Glue Dots
- Chalk Pens
Step 1: Cut Out Chalkboard Circles For Your Jar Lids
I started with the chalkboard paper stack and chose blue for the tops of my jars.
Using a Sizzix and a circle dies close to the size of the top of my jars, I cut several circles from the blue chalkboard sheets.
Another way to do this is to trace the lid onto the paper and use scissors to cut out circles. The edges of your circles won’t be visible, so any method you choose will work just fine.
Step 2: Fill Mason Jars And Add Lid Labels
Add your spices to the jars and top them with the lid and chalkboard circle. Nothing else is needed as the two-part lids will hold the chalkboard circles in place perfectly. Don’t forget to use your chalkboard pen and label the jar!
The mason jar spice jar part of this project is now complete!
But, remember when I said I had a unique twist to my method of organizing spices in mason jars? Here’s the twist.
Step 3: Line Your Drawers With Chalkboard Paper
In addition to using the chalkboard paper on your mason jar lids, line your drawers with chalkboard paper too.
I recommend using a different color of chalkboard paper in your drawer. Trust me!
When I added the paper to my drawer, I had to use two pieces cut to size and overlap them as shown. I used glue dots to stick the two pieces together so they would not move or shift.
Step 4: Trace Your Jar Lids For Organized Jar Placement
Then, trace the top of your mini mason jar all over the chalkboard paper as shown. This is the layout of how your jars will be in the drawer.
I tested out the placement of my jars in the drawer before marking my spice organizer paper. I recommend this step to save you time from having to fix it if you mess up.
However, if you do mess up, remember that it’s only a chalk marker and will easily erase with just a damp cloth.
NOTE: Be sure to trace the top as shown. If you trace around the bottom of your jars, the circles won’t be big enough and will throw off your jar placement.
Step 5: Alphabetize Your Spices And Label The Circles
I then laid out my spices in alphabetical order and began to write each spice name on the chalkboard drawer liner.
Do you see where I am going with this? Organizing spices in mason jars has never been easier – or more helpful, y’all!
Step 6: Add Your Mason Jar Spice Jars To Your Drawer
Load up your drawer with all of your spices and admire your mason jar spice organizer! Look what happens if you remove a spice as you’re cooking. You know EXACTLY where to put it back! A brilliant time-saving feature!
This is my absolute favorite part of this entire spice drawer organization project!
I now have two spice drawers that look like the below image (yep, I use a lot of spices!). I am one happy, organized lady.
Final Thoughts On Mason Jar Spice Jars
The salt and pepper grinder in the back of the drawer are just extras because there isn’t enough room in the drawer for another row of jars. But, they will also keep your jars from shifting as you open and close the drawer so it’s an all-around win-win!
The other drawer that’s not shown also has room for expansion of my spice collection. There are jars with tops that have no writing so I can fill those with whatever I wish.
Using chalkboard paper and pen in this project makes it super simple to rearrange the order of your spices any time you want. Just erase the liner with a damp cloth and reorder! You gotta love that.
Now, if y’all will excuse me, I am off to gaze lovingly at my spices. I’m still enamored with my way of organizing spices in mason jars. It was definitely a “love at first” glance!
Tips and Tricks for Mason Jar Spice Jars
Now that you’ve seen these mason jar spice jars, are you ready to make your own? Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure your project goes as smoothly as possible!
- Don’t Have A Circle Dies? No Problem! – If you don’t have circle dies, you can use a circle punch or scissors instead!
- Choose A Different Paper – For those of you who don’t like the chalkboard look, you can recreate this DIY using your favorite scrapbook paper instead! However, if you do this, just remember your writing on your labels will be permanent since it’s not a chalkboard surface.
- Don’t Like Your Handwriting? Skip it! – If you don’t like your handwriting and don’t mind your labels being permanent, you can use a label maker or make labels with your Cricut instead!

One of the things I love about this post is that I have to decide if the spice or spice mix was worthy of putting in a nice new Mason jar! Also, by lining the spices up alphabetically, I would see in an instant if I have duplicates. I only have one drawer which I can spare for spices, so I know this is something that would force me to declutter. Thanks for the idea! I’m off to buy some chalkboard paint right now!
Such a clever idea and it looks too cute.
Wish I had a drawer could use to do this project, brilliant and so “organized”. We have lots of cabinets but only 4 drawers in our weirdly shaped (horse shoe) kitchen. I could use an old drawer and hang it up with spices I guess. Would need to put shelves in drawer to keep jars from shifting when one or two taken out of drawer. Would be nice to have a cabinet empty for my other jars. Sure gives me something to plan and think about. I don’t have nearly as many spices as you do, most likely need to replace some of older ones..
Great idea and so tidy, love how it looks.
It is definitely one of my favorite projects ever!
Great idea so organized. I didn’t have extra drawer so I used baking pan and spice jars with magnets on bottom. Hung it with command hooks close to stove.
