Make patriotic bunting with bandanas for a quick and inexpensive project with supplies from the dollar store. It’s the perfect addition to your home decor or for a summer party.
When I think of patriotic bunting, I think of big, beautiful colonial-style homes with red, white, and blue bunting draped at every window. It’s a beautiful sight to look at and brings back memories of summertime BBQ parties and fourth of July fireworks.
Anyway, you don’t have to have a giant colonial-style home to have bunting. I added mine to the mantle for summer, but you can use this outside for summer parties as well.
If you need to complete your patriotic theme, these patriotic mason jars would be perfect for your next party. Don your porch with this wooden flag, your front door with a wreath, and you will be set!
If you are setting an outdoor table, use this festive table runner, and add a patriotic candle holder and a small red, white, and blue centerpiece to add ambiance.

How to Make Patriotic Bunting
What is a bunting flag?
Bunting is any festive decoration made up of fabric, paper, or plastic, gathered together with string and draped into swags or pleats.
Traditionally, the shapes of these flags are triangular or half circle and are used at all sorts of occasions like weddings, parties, graduations, holidays, and more.
Where do you hang a bunting flag?
Bunting looks best when displayed from a railing on a porch or large staircase. Typically, you see bunting draped underneath outside windows.
Supplies needed to make this patriotic bunting:
- Red, White, and Blue Bandanas (I used one of each color)
- Jute Twine
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Hot Glue and Glue Gun
This is a super easy project. In fact, even the least craftiest of people can carry this off with ease!
If you aren’t looking for a patriotic theme, choose different colors according to the occasion. I used bandanas because that’s what was already pre cut and measured, but you could use any fabric of the same measurement for this project.
How do you create a patriotic bunting?
Instructions:
Each bandana will make eight flags. Cut each one in half, in half again, then in half once more.
To make the bunting flags, fold each one in half and start about 2 inches from the bottom with your cut as shown below.
Repeat until you have enough flags for your patriotic bunting. The number of flags will depend on how long you want your banner to be. I chose to use only those flags from the center of the bandanas but you can use the edges pieces as well.
Press out any wrinkles in your bunting flags before continuing. Then run a bead of glue across the top of each flag and add in jute twine.
Add another bead of glue on top of the twine, and fold over the bandana flag. This will give you a more finished appearance.
Continue until you have the length that you wish. Then hang it anywhere that you wish.
A patriotic bunting is an expensive way to decorate for the 4th of July and more! I can’t wait to see your creations!

Really cute Angie and so perfect for patriotic holidays in summer. Colorful, easy and inexpensive. Would be making except for having yards and yards of patriotic fabric I bought when we lived in KY years ago.
Have great Sunday.
