Supplies Needed For Dollar Tree Fourth of July Decorations
- Plain-sided mason jar (I love picking these up at the Dollar Tree!)
- 3D Paint Writer in white or a hot glue gun
- Star template
- Chalky Finish Paint in red, white, and blue
- Sandpaper
- Paintbrush
- Rubbing alcohol
How to Make Dollar Tree Fourth of July Decorations
Step 1: Draw A Star Onto Mason Jar
Clean your glass well with rubbing alcohol before beginning. Make sure it is completely dry before continuing. Use a star template as a guide and draw a star onto the front of your jar with the 3D writer. Can’t find a paint writer? Just draw this on with hot glue instead. I used this one from my craft stash but you could easily print and cut out a star from the internet. Allow this to dry completely.
Step 2: Paint Jars
Apply one coat of color to each jar. I used blue and red chalk finish paint on each jar. The chalky finish adds to the farmhouse look but is definitely not required. You can use any paint that you have on hand. Allow this first coat to dry before adding additional coats.
Step 3: Add A Coat Of White Paint
Continue adding additional coats until the glass is completely covered in red and blue. Then add on a coat or two of white. NOTE: Be sure to allow each coat of paint to dry for 2 hours before adding another coat.
Step 4: Sand Jars
After that last coat has completely cured, we can grab the sandpaper and have some fun. Use a fine grit sandpaper and go lightly. You can always sand more but it is hard to add paint back to the jars. Continue to sand in a vertical direction all the way around both jars. Including that lovely little three dimensional star that you added to the front. Don’t forget to also touch the rim of the jar with the sandpaper as well.
Step 5: Wipe Away Sanding Dust
After your sanding is complete, wipe away any sanding dust and your project is complete.
This makes a wonderfully rustic jar that is perfect for any farmhouse style or country home. Add in your choice of wildflowers and you are ready for those summer guests. These patriotic mason jar vases are an easy painting project with gorgeous results.
Be sure to pick up your supplies to make these Dollar Tree Fourth of July Decorations for your home. You will be so glad that you did!
Tips and Tricks for Dollar Tree Fourth of July Decorations
Now that you’ve seen these Dollar Tree Fourth of July Decorations, are you ready to make your own? Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure your project goes as smoothly as possible!
- Clean Your Jar Well – As tempting as it can be to start painting, make sure you take the time to clean your jars. This is because the paint will take to the jar much better and you will get a better result when sanding the paint off in step 4.
- Let Your Paint Dry – One of the keys to having this project be successful is letting each coat of paint of dry. As boring as it is to watch paint dry, in this case, you need too! So, regardless of how many coats of paint you use, make sure you let each coat of paint dry completely.
- Use A Light Grit Sandpaper – For this project, you will want to use a light grit sandpaper because you don’t want to take off too much paint at one time. When looking at sandpaper, a good place to start is 180 to 220 grit sandpaper.
- Start Sanding Lightly – As I mentioned before, you can always sand more but it is hard to add paint back to the jars. Due to that, I highly recommend that you sand lightly when making this project. You might want to start sanding the star first then work your way around the jar. From there, once you have a look that you like, you can then experiment with sanding more of the paint off.
