How to make 5 bean soup in a jar
The great thing about this gift is you can create your own “design” with the different layers and colors of the beans.
Pick up the ingredients to layer this five bean soup up in a mason jar for the perfect handmade gift. Don’t forget the free printable tags below!
How long does soup in a jar last?
Dried beans and seasonings last (almost) forever. But like everything else, sometimes things can go a little stale or lose their flavor. I would recommend using this recipe combination within a year.
There’s nothing that really “goes bad” with dried beans and seasonings, but a fresh pot of soup is always the best pot of soup!
Ingredients for dried bean soup mix
- 1 quart (32-ounce) jar with lid – My jar is a decorative jar. If you use a regular mason jar you may need to adjust your measurements to fit. Make sure you adjust them equally.
- Printable label/gift tag (see below for how to download)
- 1 cup dried kidney beans
- 1 cup dried white beans
- 1 cup dried black beans
- 1 cup dried pinto beans
- 1 cup dried split peas
- 1 teaspoon dried minced onion
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon dry mustard
- 1 bay leaf
- ⅓ cup beef granules, this is also optional for vegetarians
To make the soup, you will also need:
- 2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
- 3 quarts water or beef stock
- Salt and pepper to taste
How to layer the ingredients
Layer the seasonings
To avoid the seasonings sifting through the bean layers, add the seasonings first.
To a clean 32 ounce jar, layer the minced onion, oregano, garlic powder, paprika, and dry mustard to the bottom of your mason jar. This recipe also calls for beef granules, which can be left out for vegetarians.
Add each seasoning one at a time to create the layered appearance.
Layer the beans
In whatever order you prefer, begin layering a cup of each of the beans into the jar.
Feel free to experiment with mixing the dried beans all together, alternating colors, or creating another color scheme.
After the beans have been added, place the bay leaf on top.
Complete the gift
Now, add the lid to the jar and seal tightly. You can also tie ribbon around the mouth of the jar for extra decoration. If you are using a mason jar with a lid and ring, try adding some fabric for extra decoration.
Then, follow the instructions below to print the gift tags, and your gift is ready for gifting.

Might adjust the recipe, you are instructing people to put 40+ ounces on a 32 ounce jar.
Yes, we are finding that out now. What did you do instead? The seasonings are for 5 cups beans, correct? We have this project half=way done for 6 jars. Would love advise on how you fixed the prob;lem. Thanks
So, how did you fix this? Did she ever responde?
We’ve only added 1/2 cup of each bean, planned on another layer of each and the jar is alreay almost filled. We’ve used 32 oz jars. Has anyone else had this problem?
Not only is there too much beans to fill the 32 Oz jar. Why do you tell us to put seasonings at the bottom, but in instructions say to set back seasonings for late on the recipe instructions? We have to cook the beans first, THEN add the seasonings, per your instructions. Did you try this recipe yourself? Has only 2 other people made this project in the last YEAR it has been online? Please rewrite this recipe so that we can finish these gifts. Sure glad we decided to try it first. PLEASE HELP
I no longer see my comments and I have received nothing in my email PLEASE UPDATE THIS POST WITH CORRECT INGREDIENTS. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE EXPRESSING DISCONTENT With THIS GIFT. or remove it so ppl don’t spend time and money trying to do this inaccurate post.
All comments are held for moderation and answered periodically. The jar I used obviously worked however it is a decorative jar. If you are using a standard quart canning jar, you could need fewer beans per layer. However, as long as there is an equal amount of each bean it will be fine. The intent is that the beans will be removed from the jar first, cooked, then the seasonings would be removed from the jar. If you do not like that approach, feel free to add the seasonings to a plastic bag inside or attached to the jar.
Please advise us the wht correct amount of each ingreadients since it is listed incorrectly We have posted this comment before with no response.
Sandy, I’m sorry this has been frustrating for you. These are the measurements that fit into my jar. I didn’t realize that a decorative jar would be that much different from a standard mason jar. I have not made this recipe for a different jar. What I can tell you is that these are the correct measurements for my jar.
You could try decreasing the beans to like 2/3 cup each. The goal is to have equal amounts of each bean.
As far as the seasoning goes you’re welcome to put those into a packet or ziplock and attach them to the outside of the jar. I just scooped the beans out and didn’t have a problem having the seasonings in the jar.
I will update the post to reflect that I used a decorative jar and that people may need to adjust their measurements depending on the size of their jar.
I put my seasonings in a ziploc bag at the bottom of the jar. I changed the bean amount to 3/4 cup of each and it turned out perfect.
Thank you so much for sharing! I’m glad it worked for you 🙂
