Make this wood blocks puzzle as a handmade gift idea for any toddler or pre-school-aged child on your gift-giving list. This is a really simple project that will help to keep you on a budget this holiday season as well. Grab your supplies and make your own version today.
Handmade gifts are the best! They are easy to make, fun to give, and so cherished by those who receive them. I’ve decided to do a lot more homemade gift-giving this year – even for the kids!
This puzzle is perfect for the little one on your gift list this year! It’s the perfect blend of fun, interactive, and skill-building. Plus, who doesn’t like a good puzzle? Not only does it provide endless entertainment, but it also encourages problem-solving skills, hand-eye coordination, and patience—all essential developmental skills for children.
Puzzles are like little magic boxes of learning disguised as fun! Seriously, they’re amazing for small children. First off, they’re super entertaining, keeping those little hands busy for ages.
But here’s the secret sauce: while they’re having a blast, puzzles are secretly teaching them all sorts of cool stuff. Like problem-solving, for starters. Have you seen the look of triumph on a kid’s face when they finally figure out where that last puzzle piece fits? It’s priceless! Plus, puzzles help with fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination—you name it. And the best part? They’re not just sitting there staring at a screen; they’re engaging with something tactile and real.
I have several different DIY puzzles around here. They are so fun and it’s a great activity that keeps the kids busy! You can even make a puzzle out of a picture or even their name.
How to Make a Wood Blocks Puzzle
Supplies needed to make your own wooden block puzzle:
Some links may be affiliate links which means that you will not pay anymore.
- Unfinished Wood Blocks
- Craft paints in the color of your choice
- Paint brush
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Circle template
Start with your set of blocks together and draw on your shape. I used a circle template for the circles. I used just a pencil and rules for the square and triangle.
Paint inside or outside of your shape with craft paint. It may require a few coats with the paint. I left the unpainted surface natural but you could definitely use a contrasting paint in this area if you wish.
Allow the paint to dry completely. Then turn all of the blocks over and repeat the steps on the next side.
Continue for all six sides. The longest part of this project is waiting for paint to dry.
You can pick the shapes and colors that will work for you. I chose to go very basic but you could use this method with any image.
Wrap up the set and watch the smile on the little one’s face as he or she puts together puzzles on each side of these fun blocks.
To make this gift last as long as possible, you can also follow up with a couple of coats of spray sealer after the paint has dried.
Add this wood blocks puzzle to your must make list this holiday season. It makes a quick, easy, and inexpensive handmade gift idea. Now that is my kind of gift!

I ❤️ This idea!!! I have the blocks from another learning learning idea project. Do you think 1 set of 9 blocks, 9 shapes all on the same set of blocks? Lots of wait time making them that way. Make them more challenging…make the shapes all the same color set😉
Sounds like a great idea!
Could you kindly explain what you mean? Thanks!
hello! Could you give me an idea about the dimensions of each block? I’ll need to make some from scratch.
You can make this in whatever size you would like. Just adjust the shape accordingly.
